چکیده

For original submission and image(s), see ARM Research Highlights http://www.arm.gov/science/highlights/ Research Highlight Aerosol spectra under marine stratus are often bimodal and attributable to cloud processes. Sizes at the minima between the modes have inferred supersaturations (S) of nearby clouds (Hoppel et al. 1985, 1994). This was based on the principle that the lower critical S (Sc) particles that produced cloud droplets were increased by 1) chemical reactions within droplets, and 2) Bownian capture of interstitial particles and coalescence among droplets. Thus, upon evaporation, the dry particles had even lower Sc. This resulted in a size/Sc gap because the higher Sc particles that did not form droplets were unchanged.

CCN spectra, hygroscopicity, and droplet activation kinetics of secondary organic aerosol resulting from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) resulting from the oxidation of organic species emitted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill were sampled during two survey flights conducted by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration WP-3D aircraft in June 2010. A new technique for fast measurements of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) supersaturation spectra called Scanning Flow CCN Analysis was deployed...

Closure between measured and modeled cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) using size-resolved aerosol compositions in downtown Toronto

Measurements of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) were made in downtown Toronto during August and September, 2003. CCN measurements were performed at 0.58% supersaturation using a thermal-gradient diffusion chamber, whereas the aerosol size distribution and composition were simultaneously measured with a TSI SMPS and APS system and an Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS), respectively. Aeroso...

Size matters more than chemistry for cloud-nucleating ability of aerosol particles.

Size-resolved cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) spectra measured for various aerosol types at a non-urban site in Germany showed that CCN concentrations are mainly determined by the aerosol number size distribution. Distinct variations of CCN activation with particle chemical composition were observed but played a secondary role. When the temporal variation of chemical effects on CCN activation i...

An examination of parameterizations for the CCN number concentration based on in situ measurements of aerosol activation properties in the North China Plain

Precise quantification of the cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) number concentration is crucial for understanding aerosol indirect effects and characterizing these effects in models. An evaluation of various methods for CCN parameterization was carried out in this paper based on in situ measurements of aerosol activation properties within HaChi (Haze in China) project. Comparisons were made by cl...

Scanning Flow CCN Analysis - A Method for Fast Measurements of CCN Spectra

The Continuous-Flow Streamwise Thermal-Gradient Cloud Condensation Nuclei Counter is a commercially-available instrument that is widely used for laboratory and field measurements of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Typically, the instrument is operated at a constant flow rate, and supersaturation is adjusted by changing the column streamwise temperature difference, which is slow and may introdu...
